This series consists of biographical sketches of high-level officials within the Department of Justice and its components (such as the Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation) and Supreme Court justices such as Warren E. Burger, Lewis F. Powell Jr., and William H. Rehnquist. Included are photographs, newspaper clippings, speeches and testimony, and magazine articles. Some notable officials documented in this series include Roy M. Cohn, Francis Biddle, Robert H. Jackson, Homer Cummings, Tom Clark, John Dean, Clement F. Haynsworth, William O. Douglas, James P. McGranery, J. Howard McGrath, Constance Baker Motley, and Cecil F. Poole (the first African-American to be appointed a United States Attorney.)

William Doyle Ruckelshaus was born July 24, 1932, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was Deputy Attorney General of Indiana from 1960 through 1965, and a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and its majority leader from 1967 to 1969. In 1969, President Richard M. Nixon appointed him Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division for the Department of Justice.
